5 Dead, 5 Hospitalized in Odisha After Community Feast

Key Update

A tragic food poisoning incident in Odapur village, located in Odisha’s Koraput district, has resulted in the deaths of five people, with five others currently hospitalised. The deaths occurred within the last five days, all following a community feast held a week ago. Khagapati Gouda, the latest victim, succumbed to the illness on Monday at SLN Medical College and Hospital in Koraput, marking the fifth fatality linked to the poisoning. A total of ten villagers fell ill shortly after attending the feast, experiencing severe symptoms such as acute vomiting.

Authorities Investigate Contamination

Local officials have raised concerns about the possibility of food or water contamination being responsible for the outbreak. The Chief District Medical Officer of Koraput, Rabi Narayan Mishra, stated, “We suspect contamination from food or water consumed during the feast. Our team is working to ensure safe drinking water and improve sanitation in the village.”

Ongoing Surveillance and Safety Measures

In response to the crisis, the district authorities have increased surveillance and implemented safety measures to prevent further incidents. “We are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring to ensure the safety of residents,” added Mishra. The situation remains under close investigation as health officials continue to assess the cause of the food poisoning and take necessary actions to protect the community.
