Diarrhea Outbreak at DLF New Town Heights: Authorities Investigate Water Contamination

Overview

A diarrhoea outbreak has affected residents at DLF New Town Heights in Kakkanad, which also experienced a jaundice outbreak earlier this year. Currently, 16 residents have contracted diarrhoea, and five others are exhibiting fever symptoms.

Health Officials Investigate Water Contamination as Cause

Officials from the Thrikkakara municipality visited the complex over the weekend to investigate the outbreak’s cause. They collected five water samples from various sources within the complex to determine the infection’s origin. Since diarrhoea is commonly linked to contaminated food or drinking water, authorities are focusing on these potential sources. “We were alerted about the situation at the DLF complex on Friday night and immediately initiated inspections on Saturday and Sunday, with plans to continue our checks on Monday,” said a municipality official.

A similar Diarrhoea Outbreak Reported in June

In June, a similar incident occurred when a diarrhoea outbreak struck the DLF apartment complex in Kochi’s Kakkanad, affecting hundreds of residents. The health department later confirmed that the outbreak was caused by contaminated drinking water polluted with Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals.
