Delhi’s First Atal Canteen to Serve ₹5 Meals with Strict Food Safety Oversight

Key Update

Delhi laid the foundation for its first Atal Canteen in Timarpur in Delhi on Friday, launching an initiative that aims to provide safe, hygienic and affordable meals to economically weaker sections. The canteens will serve lunch and dinner at ₹5 each, beginning December 25.

Designed for Hygiene, Clean Service and Safe Food

According to the Delhi CMO, every Atal Canteen will be equipped with:

  • A clean and sanitised serving area
  • Safe drinking water
  • Stainless steel tables and chairs
  • A digital token system to manage crowd flow
  • Real-time CCTV monitoring
  • Secure waste disposal systems
  • Strict hygiene standards for cooking and serving

These features are intended to minimise contamination risks and ensure consistent food safety.

FSSAI to Monitor Food Quality

Food quality at the canteens will be checked by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Staff will require mandatory health certification, and canteens must comply with all food safety and hygiene regulations, including handling practices, temperature control, and cleanliness.

Strong Infrastructure for Public Health

Officials said the canteens aim to provide safe, nutritious, and affordable food for vulnerable and working-class communities living in dense settlements. The facilities will be located in areas that lack clean and reliable meal options, further reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses. The initiative includes investments in improving sanitation and essential infrastructure—such as drains, toilets, community health centres, and waste management systems—around the canteen locations to support a healthier environment overall.
