FSSAI Orders Strict Action on Illegal Use of Auramine Dye in Food

After receiving complaints, FSSAI issued a strict enforcement order against food sellers who illegally add Auramine, a toxic industrial dye, to roasted chana and similar products to enhance colour and attract buyers.

Auramine Is Not Allowed in Food

Auramine, a synthetic yellow dye used in the textile and leather industries, remains completely banned in food. The Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, prohibit sellers from adding this dye to any food. When sellers use Auramine, it renders the food unsafe and hazardous under Section 3(1)(zz)(v) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI directed all state and central food safety authorities to inspect roasted chana, similar snacks, and related products, collect samples, conduct laboratory tests, and increase surveillance. Officials will examine manufacturers, processors, storage facilities, transporters, retailers, and online sellers to stop contaminated products from reaching consumers.

Action Against Violating Food Businesses

FSSAI ordered officials to take strict legal action against any food business that uses Auramine or sells contaminated products. Officials may impose fines, suspend licences, or cancel licences in serious cases.

The authority advised all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to follow safety regulations to avoid prosecution. FSSAI also directed State Food Safety Commissioners and Central Licensing Authorities to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days using the prescribed format. To support enforcement, the agency circulated a list of recognised laboratories that can test food samples for Auramine, ensuring accurate and standardised testing. The competent authority approved this directive under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
