Tamil Nadu Mandates Food Safety Licence for All Idiyappam Vendors

Key Development

The Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department now requires all idiyappam vendors to obtain a valid food safety licence before selling the popular dish anywhere in the State.

Idiyappam is sold widely across districts, especially during early mornings and late evenings. In recent weeks, authorities noticed a surge in vendors operating in Chennai and its suburbs. At the same time, complaints emerged that some vendors were preparing and selling idiyappam without adhering to basic hygiene and safety norms. In response, the department directed all idiyappam sellers to register formally and secure a licence. Officials said the licence can be obtained online for free and must be renewed annually.

Hygiene Guidelines for Vendors

The department issued detailed hygiene instructions for all vendors. Idiyappam must be prepared using safe, high-quality ingredients under clean conditions. Food handlers are required to maintain proper personal hygiene, including wearing gloves, head covers, and other protective gear while handling food. Vendors selling idiyappam via bicycles or two-wheelers must follow strict safety protocols during preparation, transport, and sale.

Individuals suffering from fever, infectious diseases, or weakened immunity have been advised not to engage in food vending. Officials emphasised that these measures are designed not to discourage small vendors but to ensure safe, hygienic food reaches consumers while bringing street food practices under a standardised safety framework.
