Air India Probes Mid-Air Illness, Suspects Food Poisoning

Passengers and Crew Fall Sick Mid-Flight

An Air India flight from London to Mumbai turned tense on June 23, 2025, when several passengers and crew members suddenly felt sick while cruising at high altitude. Initial reports claimed 11 people, including six cabin crew members, fell ill. Air India later confirmed that five passengers and two crew members experienced nausea and dizziness during different parts of the flight, causing panic among other travellers. When the Boeing 777 landed safely in Mumbai, medical teams were already waiting. Two passengers and two crew members who still felt unwell received treatment at the airport’s medical room and were discharged later. No serious injuries were reported.

Food Poisoning Likely, Says Air India

Air India suspects food poisoning as the likely cause. The airline ruled out cabin depressurisation or low oxygen, since the automatic oxygen masks did not deploy at any point. Interestingly, the pilots did not feel sick, as per safety rules, pilots eat meals served separately and after passengers to prevent food-related risks affecting both pilots at the same time.

Internal Probe and DGCA Notified

Air India has started an internal investigation and notified the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The probe will focus on in-flight catering and other possible reasons behind the sudden illness. This incident has renewed concerns about in-flight food safety and passenger care.
