Key Update
Food safety officials of the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) in Odisha destroyed nearly 400 kilograms of stale sweets and synthetic food colours during inspections at several sweet shops on Sunday. They also collected fines of over ₹1.27 lakh from shop owners for violating food safety regulations.
Raids Conducted Across Silk City
As part of a pre-Diwali food safety drive, three teams of officials raided about 70 sweet shops and hotels across Berhampur. The inspections covered major areas, including Bada Bazar, Aska Road, and Gate Bazar. The drive aimed to curb the sale of adulterated or unhygienic sweets ahead of the festive rush.
Use of Synthetic Colours and China Salt Found
Officials discovered the use of synthetic food colours and China salt in the preparation of various food items during the raids. Samples of sweets were collected for laboratory testing, and any confirmed case of adulteration will lead to strict action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Hygiene Advisory for Shop Owners
BeMC directed sweet shop and hotel owners to maintain hygiene and sell only fresh sweets during the festive season. The civic body also urged consumers to remain vigilant and purchase sweets only from outlets that follow proper food safety and hygiene practices.
