Report
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment in Germany (BfR) has launched a children’s book, “Luis and Maya’s Adventure in the Shrinking Lab: Searching for Clues in the Kitchen,” designed to teach kids about food safety. The story follows two students, Luis and Maya, as they explore the BfR shrinking lab and meet Fred, an amiable bacillus. As they track a bacterial antagonist, they uncover the mystery behind the fridge—teaching kids valuable lessons in kitchen cleanliness and food safety along the way. The book is available for free in German and can be accessed or requested online via the BfR website.
Teaching Children About Foodborne Risks
While investigating in the kitchen, Luis and Maya encounter harmful bacteria and viruses, including Campylobacter—the most common bacterial pathogen linked to foodborne illnesses. The duo learns that improperly cooked poultry or contaminated meat can be a primary source of infection. They also discover how poor kitchen hygiene can lead to cross-contamination, where bacteria spread between foods. The book educates children on preventing cross-contamination and dealing with “Campys.”
Protecting Vulnerable Children
Children are especially vulnerable to foodborne illnesses because their immune systems are still developing. Professor Andreas Hensel, president of the BfR, emphasized that the book’s goal is to teach young readers the importance of kitchen hygiene while they join Luis and Maya on their detective adventure.
“In Germany, 100,000 people get sick each year from contaminated food, and the real number is probably much higher. Children are at a higher risk due to their developing immune systems,” Hensel explained. “Our book simplifies these concepts for young kids, empowering them to protect themselves from foodborne dangers.”
ADAFSA Partners with SpaceToon for Fun Learning
In another initiative, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has teamed up with SpaceToon to create six animated episodes based on short stories. The episodes will air on SpaceToon. Each 4- to 5-minute episode addresses critical agriculture and food safety topics in an engaging and educational manner for children.
These include reducing food waste, ensuring food safety during family vacations, understanding food labels, managing allergies, preventing zoonotic diseases, and exploring the link between animal welfare and human health.
Local Characters Make Learning Relatable
The stories incorporate familiar Emirati characters and settings to make the content more relatable and impactful for young audiences. Badr Hassan Al Shehhi, ADAFSA’s director of communication and community engagement, said, “We aim to raise a generation that understands food security and can make informed food choices by presenting these ideas in a fun, accessible way.” “These episodes are not only entertaining but also serve as valuable educational tools, making complex concepts easy for children to understand. We hope to inspire kids to learn more about agriculture and the food industry.”
