Chicken in Mushroom Rice? Noida Eatery Faces Heat After Viral Mix-Up

Key Update

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a show-cause notice to a fast food outlet in Greater Noida after it allegedly served a non-vegetarian dish in place of a vegetarian order. The incident occurred at the California Burrito outlet in Delta-2 when a customer received chicken rice instead of mushroom rice through an online delivery platform.

Sandeep Bhati, a resident of Tilapta village, placed the order expecting a vegetarian meal. When he discovered the error, he immediately visited the outlet to report the issue. Bhati claimed the staff showed no remorse and did not offer an apology. He later approached a nearby police post to complain, but said he received no response.

Viral Video Triggers Food Safety Action

Frustrated by the lack of response, Bhati shared a video of the food parcel on Instagram. The video quickly gained traction online and caught the attention of the food safety department. Assistant Commissioner (Food) Sarvesh Mishra confirmed that the department took suo motu cognisance of the viral video. Although Bhati had not submitted a formal complaint, officials sent a show-cause notice to the outlet, asking for a written explanation within seven days.

Outlet Under Inspection, Sample Sent for Testing

Following the incident, a food safety officer inspected the restaurant and collected a paneer sample from the kitchen for laboratory testing. Depending on the outlet’s response and the test results, the department may impose a penalty or conduct further inspections. The incident has raised fresh concerns over food safety and handling standards in popular quick-service restaurants, especially those catering to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian customers.
