Food safety officials seized 33 kg of chips and 5 kg of bread and buns from a shop in Shozhapuram near Rajapalayam, near Madurai, on Thursday. The seized items had no manufacturing date labels, violating packaging regulations.
Cement dust found on food packets
During an inspection led by Virudhunagar District Food Safety Designated Officer Dr. S. Mariappan and Rajapalayam Union Food Safety Officer Selvaraj, the team discovered that shopkeepers had stored chips alongside cement bags. Officials noticed cement dust covering the packets, making the food unsafe for consumption. They immediately seized the contaminated products.
Chewing tobacco under investigation
The officials also found 10 kg of chewing tobacco stocked in the shop. When the shopkeeper objected to its seizure, the team collected samples for laboratory testing to verify whether a court exemption applies. Dr. Mariappan confirmed the tobacco would be analysed before further action.
