Commission Acts on Viral Video
The Punjab State & Chandigarh (UT) Human Rights Commission has launched an inquiry after a viral social media video allegedly showed a fruit vendor in Sector 26 washing seasonal fruits with detergent water. The footage, widely circulated under the caption “Shocking video of main sabzi mandi Sector 26, Chandigarh,” has raised serious public health and food safety concerns. The video reportedly captures a fruit cart vendor using detergent water to clean fruits before sale. When confronted, the vendor allegedly admitted that many others in the area follow the same practice to make the produce appear clean and fresh.
Officials Ordered to Investigate
Justice Sant Parkash, chairman of the commission, directed the director of health services, the commissioner of food safety, and the secretary of the mandi board, Chandigarh, to investigate the incident immediately. He ordered them to submit a detailed report and appear in person before the Commission with responsible senior officers.
Unsafe Practices Threaten Public Health
Food adulteration and unsanitary handling practices can pose severe risks, including kidney damage, liver disorders, and even cancer. Residents rely on fresh fruits, vegetables, milk, and other perishables for daily nutrition, making strict food safety measures essential to protect public health.
