Egg Safety Row: Karnataka Minister Urges Calm, Orders Fresh Tests

Key Update

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao urged the public on Sunday to stay calm and verify facts amid social media claims that a popular egg brand contains cancer-causing substances. He said these posts have created unnecessary panic about egg safety and advised people to continue consuming eggs safely while authorities verify the information.

Investigation to Cover All Brands and Practices

When asked about the possible use of substances in poultry farming to prevent bacterial infections or boost egg production, Rao said he could not comment without verified information and highlighted the sensitivity of the issue. He explained that authorities need to examine whether such practices are occurring, identify who is involved, determine which companies are implicated, and check if others are engaging in similar activities.

Rao asked the department to verify and investigate the matter and emphasized taking responsible action, warning against hasty decisions based on social media claims. He confirmed that officials will conduct a thorough examination, decide on the next steps, and inform the public within a couple of days.

Previous Tests Found No Harmful Substances

Rao confirmed that the Food Safety Department conducted tests six months ago and found no harmful substances in eggs. To address public concern, the department plans to test eggs from all brands. Rao assured that authorities will take strict action if they detect any cancer-causing or harmful elements.
