Report
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Palghar of Maharashtra has taken firm action against food safety violations in the Vasai-Virar region following a surge in complaints over unhygienic practices. In a recent enforcement drive, FDA teams inspected 183 establishments, including hotels, restaurants, and food stalls, and collected 154 food samples for laboratory testing.
FDA Takes Action After Rising Complaints
P.R. Singerwad, Assistant Commissioner and Designated Officer of the Palghar FDA, reported that 14 food samples failed to meet the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its 2011 regulations. The department filed 14 cases against the establishments responsible for the violations.
14 Food Samples Fail Safety Standards, Legal Cases Filed
As part of the crackdown, the FDA also issued notices to 124 outlets, filed seven legal cases, and imposed fines totaling ₹25,000 in five cases. Due to the severity of non-compliance, the FDA suspended licenses of five food businesses. The inspections followed a formal complaint submitted on April 11, 2025, by Kishor Nana Patil of the Shiv Sena (UBT) Consumer Protection Cell. Patil raised concerns about widespread food adulteration and poor hygiene across Vasai-Virar, which has seen a rapid expansion in its food service sector. Complaints have increasingly focused on unsanitary kitchens, adulterated food items, and unlicensed operators.
Urge for stricter regulations
In response, consumer advocacy groups have pushed for stricter and more consistent regulation. Patil stressed the need for regular inspections to protect public health and hold food vendors accountable. The FDA has confirmed that it will continue regular inspections and take strict legal action where necessary to ensure food safety and hygiene across the district.
