FDA Pune Requires Formal Complaints; Social Media Videos Not Enough

Key Update

Food safety officials in Pune have clarified that they will not take action against hotels and eateries based solely on videos or posts shared on social media. They insist that formal complaints are mandatory before they initiate any investigation or enforcement. Suresh Annapure, Joint Commissioner of the FDA Pune region, highlighted the growing risk of digitally altered or AI-generated videos. “With advances in technology, videos circulating on social media could be manipulated or entirely fabricated,” he said. This caution underscores the importance of verifying evidence before acting on it.

Viral Videos Alone Cannot Trigger FDA Action

Despite several videos alleging poor hygiene and food safety violations at restaurants going viral recently, the FDA emphasised that social media posts do not constitute a legal basis for action. Officials said they need formal complaints with details to launch swift and proper investigations. The FDA Pune has conducted suo moto inspections only when it received verified complaints. Officials explained that without official complaints, it is difficult to initiate enforcement. They urge consumers who experience or witness any violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, or related regulations to file formal complaints with the FDA.

License Suspended at Bhiwandi Darbar Hotel

Following a customer complaint in July about finding a dead cockroach in a bowl of soup at Bhiwandi Darbar Hotel in Camp, the FDA promptly inspected the eatery and temporarily suspended its food license. This case demonstrates the agency’s response when formal complaints trigger investigations.

How to Report Food Safety Violations to the FDA in Pune

The FDA encourages citizens to submit written or online complaints about food safety violations. They can also use the toll-free helpline number 1800222365 to report issues directly to the authorities. By relying on verified complaints rather than unverified social media content, the FDA Pune aims to maintain fair and effective enforcement of food safety laws.
