Food Poisoning Sickens Over 30 Students in Thrikkakara

Overview

More than 30 students from N-Able Training Institute, a German language centre in Thrikkakara municipality, in Ernakulam, fell sick on Wednesday due to suspected food poisoning. Authorities rushed them to various government and private hospitals in the city. According to municipal health officials, 10 boys and 20 girls experienced symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and loose motion on Wednesday afternoon. By evening, hospitals discharged all affected students after confirming their condition was stable. Following the incident, the institute declared leave for all students, most of whom returned home.

Authorities Collect Samples for Lab Testing

Health officials launched an inquiry, collected food and water samples from the hostel premises, and sent them for laboratory testing. They expect the results within two days. “We have not taken any action against the institute so far, but we are monitoring the situation closely,” said Thrikkakara municipality health inspector Asif Shamsudheen. “We will decide further steps after reviewing the lab findings.” Local councillor Dinoob T G, who represents the Karimakkadu division where the incident occurred, said the institute operates from a rented building owned by KMM College. He added that the council will discuss the matter after receiving the final reports from the food safety and health departments.

Institute Denies Blame, Points to College Canteen

An N-Able Training Institute staff member, who spoke to TOI on condition of anonymity, denied that the institute caused the food poisoning. He claimed the students had eaten earlier from a canteen on a private college campus.
