FSSAI Approves Use of Recycled PET for Food Packaging

Report

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has revised its packaging regulations to permit the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food packaging, marking a major shift toward sustainability.

Ensuring Food Safety Standards

Under the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) First Amendment Regulations, 2025, FSSAI has lifted its ban on recycled plastics for food packaging. Manufacturers can now use recycled polyethylene terephthalate for packaging, storing, carrying, or dispensing food, as long as it meets national safety standards and specific guidelines that FSSAI will establish.

FSSAI emphasized that it will approve recycled PET only once the required safety standards are set. The authority remains committed to food safety and ensures that all recycled PET materials used for food contact comply with strict safety and quality regulations.

Looking Ahead

FSSAI plans to release detailed guidelines on safety, quality, and compliance for recycled PET in the coming months. This move aligns environmental sustainability with food safety, taking a significant step toward reducing plastic waste.
