The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has updated the deadline for food companies to comply with changes in its labelling regulations. This update, confirmed during the 45th meeting of the Food Authority, marks a significant shift in the regulatory framework for the food industry. The revised provisions will be enforced starting July 1, 2025. This gives food companies 180 days from the notification date to adjust their operations and align with the new regulations.

Regulatory Framework

Under Section 92 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI can modify regulations with the consent of the Central Government. These revised timelines specifically pertain to changes in the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, as well as other relevant sections of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations (FSSR).

Flexibility During Crisis

In addition to the regular timeline, FSSAI has introduced a system that allows for adjustments during emergencies. The Authority can now modify individual implementation timelines to swiftly address public health or safety concerns.
