FSSAI flag 500+ e-commerce food warehouses for safety violations

Key Development

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) served notices to 526 storage facilities linked to e-commerce food platforms following 8,143 inspections conducted in 2024–25, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada informed the Rajya Sabha. Over the past two years, FSSAI has conducted five meetings with online food business operators, highlighting regulatory requirements such as delivery staff training, proper product labelling, warehouse traceability, and customer grievance redressal.

MP Raises Concerns Over Dark Store Violations

Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi questioned the government on hygiene and licensing breaches at dark stores or warehouses operated by quick commerce firms. He also sought clarification on enforcement actions in cities such as Pune, Gurugram, and Bengaluru, where some outlets reportedly operated without valid licenses. Responding to these concerns, Prasada stated that FSSAI had already established licensing procedures for e-commerce food businesses in 2018. Platforms are required to ensure listed sellers are licensed, provide complete food information, and delist non-compliant items.

Quarterly Review of Enforcement at the National Level

To monitor enforcement, the FSSAI collaborates with the Food Safety Commissioners of states and union territories through Central Advisory Committee meetings held every three months.
