Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, has called for a nationwide strategy to enhance the monitoring of pesticide residues in food. While addressing the National Stakeholder Consultation on Challenges in Monitoring Pesticide Residues in Food Commodities, organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Jadhav emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts to strengthen food safety and sustainability.

Nationwide Strategy for Food Safety

During the consultation, Jadhav highlighted the importance of reviewing existing pesticide monitoring practices and developing a more robust mechanism to tackle residue-related challenges. Furthermore, he underscored the vital role of agriculture in sustaining millions of livelihoods and ensuring food security. Since farmers are increasingly adopting new technologies, he pointed out that there is a valuable opportunity to educate them on the responsible use of pesticides and Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). To address these concerns effectively, he called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to create an action plan aimed at minimizing pesticide residues in food commodities.

Public Health Concerns

Meanwhile, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava drew attention to the significant public health risks posed by the indiscriminate use of pesticides. She emphasized that strengthening monitoring systems and increasing public awareness are crucial steps toward ensuring food safety. Additionally, she pointed out that addressing existing gaps in monitoring requires well-defined, actionable strategies to better protect public health. Ensuring that every individual has access to safe food, she noted, should be a priority for policymakers and regulatory bodies.

Stakeholder Collaboration and Policy Reforms

The consultation served as a platform for bringing together key stakeholders, including government officials, scientific experts, and industry representatives, to exchange ideas and discuss best practices. Adding to the discussions, Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, raised concerns about the prevalence of spurious pesticides in the market and advocated for their more judicious use. Similarly, Shri Subrata Gupta, Secretary of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, stressed the need for collaboration across the entire food value chain. He further noted that pesticide residues not only pose serious health risks but also have negative commercial implications, affecting domestic and international trade.

Future Directions for Food Safety

In addition to discussing existing challenges, experts at the consultation deliberated on aligning India’s Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) with international standards while taking into account the country’s unique agricultural landscape. Moreover, the discussions emphasized the need to expand national surveillance programs and enhance laboratory capacities to ensure better compliance with food safety regulations.

Beyond regulatory measures, the consultation also placed a strong focus on sustainable solutions. The need to educate farmers on alternative approaches, such as bio-pesticides and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), was widely acknowledged as a key strategy for reducing health risks and addressing trade concerns. Moving forward, the insights and recommendations gathered from this consultation are expected to inform policy reforms, ultimately strengthening India’s food safety framework.
