Key Development
The Gujarat government has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on proposed amendments to the penal provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), under the Health and Family Welfare Department, is leading the effort to tighten enforcement and promote safer food practices across the state.
The draft amendments propose harsher food safety penalties to discourage food safety violations. By inviting citizens, institutions, and industry stakeholders to review and respond, the government aims to ensure transparency and foster broader participation in shaping food safety regulations.
FDCA Calls for Suggestions Within 30 Days
Dr. Hemant Koshia, Commissioner of the FDCA, Gujarat, emphasised the importance of stakeholder engagement in making food laws more effective and enforceable. He stated that the proposed changes are designed not only to be stricter but also practical to implement across the state. The public has until August 20, 2025, to submit suggestions. People can review the draft and share their input online through the FDCA portal: https://gujhealth.gujarat.gov.in/citizen-corner.htm. They can also scan the QR code included in the official notice to access the draft directly.
Gujarat Reinforces Commitment to Food Safety
By opening up the amendment process to public input, Gujarat demonstrates its commitment to public health, accountability, and participatory governance. The move marks a significant step toward building a more robust and responsive food safety framework.
