How to File Food Safety Complaints Using FSSAI’s New QR Code System

Key Development

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a QR code system to make it easier for customers to report unhygienic kitchen conditions or poor-quality food in hotels and restaurants. This initiative aims to end the long-standing disputes between diners and food outlets over food quality and hygiene. Under the latest FSSAI rule, all eateries must display this QR code at billing counters and dining areas. The code is linked to the “Food Safety Connect” mobile app, allowing customers to instantly register a grievance.

Step-by-Step Guide to Filing a Complaint

Step 1:

Scan the QR code displayed at the restaurant or hotel. This will open the Food Safety Connect portal or prompt you to download the mobile app from the Google Play Store. Alternatively, you can visit the portal directly at: https://foscos.fssai.gov.in/consumergrievance

Step 2:

Register on the platform.

  • Click “Register” under the Consumer section.
  • Enter your mobile number, receive the OTP, fill in the required details, and click Submit.

Step 3:

Log in with your registered mobile number.

Step 4:

On the left panel, select Register New Complaint.

Step 5:

Choose the complaint category from the dropdown list and fill in all mandatory details.

Step 6:

Under Food Business Operator, select the name from the dropdown. If it’s not listed, choose “Other FBO.”

Step 7:

Review your complaint details and click Submit.

Step 8:

Note the ticket number generated — you can use it to track your complaint’s status.

What Happens Next?

Regional FSSAI officials handle grievances once submitted. Placing QR codes at checkout counters and dining tables ensures customers see and use the complaint system without searching online. This new initiative gives diners a simple, direct, and official way to raise food safety concerns, empowering consumers and pushing restaurants to maintain the highest hygiene standards.
