Key Development
Hydration plays a key role in preventing fatigue, headaches, and jet lag during air travel. While airlines regularly serve water on board, food safety experts point out that maintaining hygienic aircraft water systems remains critical. According to the World Health Organisation’s Guide to Hygiene and Sanitation in Aviation, airlines hold full responsibility for ensuring the safety of potable water, including regular cleaning and disinfection of aircraft water tanks.
Concerns Raised Over Aircraft Water Tanks
Public attention turned to onboard water safety after Dr Huma Shaikh, a general practitioner, highlighted hygiene concerns on social media. She explained that aircraft water tanks and pipelines are difficult to disinfect thoroughly and may develop biofilms over time, potentially affecting water quality. However, she clarified that this does not indicate a high risk of serious illness, but calls for informed choices by passengers.
Experts Stress Hygiene Standards May Vary
Medical experts agree that hydration is essential, especially during long flights, as aircraft cabins have extremely dry air. Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant at Gleneagles Hospital, Mumbai, noted that water used for hot beverages often comes from onboard tanks. “Hygiene standards can vary between airlines and aircraft, which makes caution advisable,” she said, adding that variation does not automatically mean the water is unsafe.
Aviation Specialists Advise Safer Choices
Aviation expert and former Air India official K Anuradha Suresh stated that potable water system maintenance depends on individual airline practices. While systems may meet regulatory requirements, she advised passengers to rely on bottled water for drinking and brushing, using tap water only for washing and lavatories. While airlines follow regulatory guidelines for water safety, experts agree that choosing bottled water reduces potential hygiene risks. Carrying personal drinking water or opting for sealed bottled water on board remains a practical food safety measure for air travellers.
