Key Update
While many parts of Kerala continue to report coconut oil adulteration, Kannur presents a different picture. Over the past two years, the Food Safety Department has not reported a single case of coconut oil adulteration in the district. Instead, the highest number of complaints have involved jaggery laced with synthetic colours, widely sold in local markets. Authorities have identified jaggery as the top adulterated product in Kannur and are now focusing enforcement efforts accordingly.
Tests Reveal Pesticides in Rice, Salt Lacking Iodine
Food safety officers collected four samples of jaggery for lab analysis, with results expected soon. Meanwhile, tests have confirmed the presence of pesticides in samples of rice powder, maida, and biriyani rice. Some salt brands lacked iodine, and chilli powder samples showed signs of adulteration. Despite these concerns, officials noted that fruits and vegetables in the district remain relatively safe for consumption.
300 Samples Tested Monthly at Kannur Lab
The Government Regional Analytical Laboratory in Kannur receives and tests approximately 300 food samples per month, with each of the district’s 11 food safety circles required to submit at least 28 samples. “We have planned special drives and intensified night-time inspections ahead of the Onam season,” said K. Sujayan, Assistant Commissioner of the District Food Safety Department. He added that surprise checks will also be carried out to catch violators and ensure compliance with food safety standards.
