Key Update
A woman in Kolkata has accused online grocery platform Big Basket of delivering contaminated formula milk for her 4.5-month-old infant, raising serious concerns over safety and hygiene in online food deliveries. After receiving the formula milk through the app, the mother, identified as Sneha, opened the sealed container and immediately detected a strong phenyl-like chemical smell. She also pointed out that the packaging was sticky and appeared tampered with, suggesting possible mishandling or contamination during storage or delivery.
Big Basket Response Sparks Backlash
Sneha contacted Big Basket customer service to report the issue. According to her, the company offered only a basic apology without taking further responsibility or offering any clarity on the contamination. The lack of accountability led her to share the incident online to warn other parents. She posted a video detailing the experience, urging consumers to avoid purchasing child-related products from the platform. In her post, she also appealed to Kolkata Police to take action against the grocery delivery service.
Public Reaction and Consumer Rights Advice
The video quickly went viral, sparking widespread outrage across social media. Concerned users flooded the comments, urging the mother to escalate the matter legally. Several advised her to file a formal complaint with the Consumer Commission, while others expressed distrust in online platforms for food and baby products. The incident has reignited debate around quality control in India’s online grocery sector, especially for sensitive products like infant food. Many consumers have now begun calling for stricter regulatory oversight to ensure product safety and proper grievance redressal mechanisms.
