Madurai Hotel Sealed After Food Poisoning Incident

Key Update

Food safety officials in KK Nagar, Madurai, Tamilnadu sealed a hotel on Sunday following a suspected food poisoning incident that left eight people ill. Seven patients have since been discharged, but a seven-year-old boy remains in the ICU of a private hospital in critical condition.

Incident Details

On March 13, a group visited the hotel and consumed non-vegetarian food. By the next day, all members experienced vomiting and diarrhoea. They initially sought treatment at a local PHC before being admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital. The boy’s condition worsened on March 15, prompting his transfer to a private hospital for critical care, according to a Health Department official.

Actions Taken by Authorities

Madurai Food Safety officials inspected the hotel, collected food samples for testing, suspended the shop’s licence, and imposed a fine of ₹8,000. Sanitary officers also examined the premises, collected water samples for analysis, and reported suspected encroachment on government land. Consequently, the facility has been sealed until further notice.
