McDonald’s India Introduces Multi-Millet Bun for Healthier Burgers

Key Update

McDonald’s India has launched a Multi-Millet Bun as a nutritious alternative for its burgers, giving customers a healthier choice without compromising taste. The innovative bun was co-developed with India’s premier food research institute, the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) in Mysuru, under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Five Millets, One Bun

The Multi-Millet Bun combines five nutritious millets—jowar, bajra, ragi, proso, and kodo—offering enhanced fibre, protein, and essential nutrients. Customers can upgrade any burger with this bun for an additional Rs 10. Initially launched in select cities, McDonald’s plans to make the millet bun widely available across all outlets and ordering platforms in India.

Supporting Local Farmers and Indian Innovation

Sanjeev Agrawal, Chairman of McDonald’s India (North & East), highlighted that the collaboration focuses on promoting health, nutrition, and supporting local agriculture, aligning with government initiatives to benefit both consumers and the economy. Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh praised the launch as a significant milestone for Indian innovation, noting that McDonald’s Millet Bun Burger, developed using CFTRI’s indigenous technology, validates India’s food technology on a global stage. He highlighted how the initiative reinforces the country’s millet movement and demonstrates the global influence of traditional Indian nutrition.

The Millet Movement in India

The millet movement aims to revive millet cultivation and consumption, promoting these grains as a sustainable and nutritious alternative to water-intensive crops like rice. Supported by government policies, awareness campaigns, and value-added products, the initiative gained international recognition with 2023 declared as the “International Year of Millets.”

Health Benefits of Millets

Millets are rich in fibre, protein, antioxidants, and essential minerals, offering multiple health benefits:

  • Heart & BP: Lowers cholesterol, supports cardiovascular health
  • Blood Sugar: Stabilises sugar, great for diabetics
  • Weight & Digestion: High fibre/protein boosts satiety, aids gut health
  • Gluten-Free: Safe for celiac or gluten-sensitive individuals
  • Bone & Immunity: Calcium and zinc strengthen bones and immunity

With the Multi-Millet Bun, McDonald’s India not only provides a healthier menu option but also supports local agriculture and promotes the nutritional and environmental benefits of traditional Indian grains.
