Key Development
The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) is modernising India’s food sector by prioritising food safety and hygiene standards. By June 2025, it had approved 1,601 projects under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) and released ₹6,411 crore to upgrade storage, processing, and handling systems that prevent contamination and wastage. MoFPI is developing 1,134 infrastructure projects, including 41 Mega Food Parks and 395 Cold Chain systems, to store and transport perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, dairy, and meat under strict hygiene controls. These facilities actively reduce spoilage and lower the risk of foodborne diseases.
Training Micro Enterprises in Hygiene Compliance
Under the PM Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme, the ministry has sanctioned over 1.44 lakh micro projects across India. It is training small business owners in food safety protocols, helping them meet FSSAI standards, and supporting them with branding and financial aid. In Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, MoFPI designated the district as a Banana Cluster under PMKSY and an ODOP hub under PMFME. It has approved 261 banana-processing projects to improve hygiene in handling and to enhance product quality for both domestic and export markets.
Upgrading Large-Scale Manufacturing Safety Standards
Through the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI), MoFPI has approved 170 projects with a ₹10,900 crore budget. The scheme supports manufacturers in adopting global food safety certifications, automated handling, and contamination-control technology from 2021 to 2027.
Promoting Safe Food Practices Globally
MoFPI has hosted World Food India in 2017, 2023, and 2024 to connect Indian producers with international investors and technology providers. These events have introduced advanced food safety solutions and global best practices to India’s processing sector. By building modern infrastructure, training enterprises, and fostering international partnerships, MoFPI is reducing foodborne risks, creating safer supply chains, and boosting consumer confidence in Indian food products worldwide.
