Mumbai, June 17, 2023: The city of Mumbai is grappling with an alarming increase in gastroenteritis cases, with a total of 6,677 cases reported in just six months. As per data provided by the civic health department, this represents a 20% surge compared to the same period last year. The rising temperatures have been linked to the surge in gastro cases, with daily reports of more than 40-50 cases in recent weeks. Young people, who frequently consume outside food, are among the most affected. Bacterial pathogens such as salmonella, staphylococcus aureus, and escherichia coli are common causes of food poisoning in India. The contamination of water and food during hot weather is a leading contributor to gastro cases. Health officials urge the public to practice good hygiene, including handwashing and avoiding street food, to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases.
