The Nagpur Division of Central Railway has begun enforcing the Railway Board’s order to distribute Orange I-Cards to all authorised contractual food vendors. This initiative, rolled out for the first time at Nagpur railway station, aims to improve food safety and hygiene for passengers. Unlike the earlier QR code-based verification system, the new Orange I-Cards come embedded with digitised information for instant authentication. These cards allow both authorities and passengers to quickly identify legitimate vendors, thereby eliminating unauthorised sellers from the premises.
Clear Distinction Between Staff and Vendors
The Railway Board has colour-coded the ID cards to avoid confusion—yellow cards for railway employees and orange for contractual vendors. This system enables passengers to easily distinguish between official staff and authorised vendors, reinforcing trust and transparency in railway catering services. Authorities have already started distributing the cards to around 450 food vendors operating at railway stations in the Nagpur division. Officials stressed that this verification process will ensure vendors maintain hygiene standards and comply with food safety regulations.
Officials Urge Commuters to Support the Initiative
A senior official from the Nagpur Division stated, “This system not only enhances food safety but also builds confidence among passengers.” Railway authorities are encouraging travellers to purchase food only from those displaying valid Orange I-Cards.
