Key Update
A four-year-old boy, Bigil Pradhan, tragically died in Musimaha village, Kandhamal district, Odisha, after accidentally swallowing a small plastic toy hidden inside a chips packet. The child was eating the snack at home when the toy became lodged in his throat, causing him to choke.
Medical Officer Confirms Cause of Death
Dr Jakesh Samantara, in charge at the Community Health Centre (CHC), confirmed that the toy blocked a critical airway, preventing the child from breathing. “The child likely mistook the toy for something edible and tried to swallow it. Unfortunately, it blocked a vital airway, leading to suffocation,” he explained.
Warning on Toys Inside Food Packets
Dr Samantara highlighted the dangers of including toys in food packets intended for children. He warned that such practices pose serious risks, as children may mistake toys for edible items. “Food companies must stop placing toys inside snack packets to prevent such tragic incidents,” he urged.
