Odisha Outbreak: Cholera Cases Found, Diarrhoea Kills 7, Hundreds Sick

Overview

Odisha diarrhoea outbreak in Jajpur district has turned deadlier with cholera confirmed in multiple patients.Officials reported two more deaths on Sunday, raising the death toll to seven since the outbreak began on June 9. Over 1,750 people have fallen ill so far, with around 1,500 recovered and about 250 still hospitalised, according to Additional District Medical Officer Prakash Chandra Bal.

Cholera Confirmed, Central Team on Ground

Chief District Medical Officer Bijay Mishra confirmed that 11 diarrhoea patients tested positive for cholera, with lab tests finding Vibrio cholerae in multiple stool samples. In response, the Union Health Ministry deployed a 14-member central team, including experts from the ICMR, DGHS, FSSAI, NCDC, and WHO. Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling visited affected hospitals and assured residents that teams from SCB Medical College in Cuttack are assisting local doctors. Director of Public Health Nilakantha Mishra said the outbreak can be contained if no new patients are admitted.

Water and Food Safety Measures in Full Swing

State and district officials have ramped up efforts to stop further spread:

  • Disinfecting and chlorinating water sources, repairing pipelines, and sealing illegal water bottling plants.
  • Distributing ORS, IV fluids, halogen tablets, and hygiene kits through ASHA, Anganwadi, and health workers.
  • Banning street food stalls and community feasts, especially during the Raja festival, to reduce foodborne spread.
  • Urban Local Bodies and district administrations have been ordered to intensify monitoring of drinking water, inspect potential contamination points, and ensure prompt supply of safe water.

Outbreak Extends Beyond Jajpur

Officials have detected diarrhoea and suspected cholera cases in Bhadrak, Keonjhar, Cuttack (Gholapur village reported over 30 cases), and Puri’s Astaranga area, where about 20 fell ill. Medical teams have reached these localities for immediate treatment and containment.

State Launches ‘Stop Diarrhoea’ Drive

To prevent monsoon-related waterborne diseases, health officials launched a “Stop Diarrhoea” campaign in southern Odisha districts, including Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal, running from June 16 to July 31. The drive covers door-to-door awareness, water chlorination, and child health education.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

Health authorities urge residents to:

  • Drink boiled water only
  • Avoid eating outside food
  • Maintain strict personal hygiene
  • Seek immediate medical help for diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Follow official advisories

Officials said that while the situation shows signs of stabilising, strict vigilance and cooperation from the public are critical.
