Ration Rice Turns Blue in Kottayam, Triggering Food Safety Probe

Key Development

In an unusual incident in Kottayam, raw rice supplied through a ration shop in Enthayar near Mundakayam turned blue when washed, raising serious concerns about the quality of rice distributed under the public distribution system.

Consumer Flags Issue After Rice Disintegrates

The issue came to light at the home of Biju Thomas of Nirappel House, who noticed the colour change immediately after adding water. He also found that the rice disintegrated into a powder during washing. Biju first informed the ration shop dealer and later complained to the Food Safety Department.

Initial Explanation Ruled Out

Officials initially attributed the discolouration to a possible chemical reaction caused by high iron content in the water. However, this explanation was questioned when the rice continued to turn blue even after being washed using water from a different source.

Civil Supplies Seek Detailed Report

Following the development, a formal complaint was filed with the Civil Supplies Office. The Taluk Supply Officer said a detailed report has been sought to verify whether other consumers supplied by the same ration outlet are facing similar issues.
