Key Update
The government plans to require restaurants to disclose their full menu when applying for a licence or renewing one. Non-vegetarian outlets may have to specify whether they will serve items such as beef or pork, while vegetarian restaurants will also need to list their planned dishes. According to media reports, the proposal could take effect in the coming months. An official, speaking anonymously, said the plan was revisited after a suggestion from the Uttar Pradesh government.
Respecting Cultural Preferences
The measure seeks to respect cultural dietary practices while ensuring customers have clear information about the food they order. Vegetarian outlets that decide to switch to a non-vegetarian menu will need to update their licence before making the change.
FSSAI Backs the Change
The Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recommended the update during a meeting in Bhubaneswar. Officials say the move aligns with FSSAI’s commitment to food safety and consumer empowerment, allowing people to make choices that match their beliefs and preferences. Once approved, the new rule will be implemented by state governments and union territories.
