Shawarma Scare: Kochi Hotel Shut After Food Poisoning Outbreak

Young Woman Battles for Life After Eating Shawarma

Three people from Irinjalakuda fell sick after eating shawarma and shawai from Real Arabia Hotel in Ravipuram, Kochi, on June 16. By evening, they suffered vomiting, fever, and diarrhea and sought treatment in Kochi. One young woman’s condition worsened, forcing her family to shift her from Angamaly to Ernakulam, where she spent three days in the ICU. Her health has now slightly improved. Her mother said doctors confirmed food poisoning and that they filed a complaint with the Ernakulam Food Safety Department. They later found out the hotel had shut down, claiming maintenance work. Of the other two, one is in a Thrissur hospital and the other is recovering at home.

More Complaints Surface After Initial Incident

Assistant Food Safety Commissioner Jose Lawrence said his team is investigating based on the family’s complaint. He also confirmed that they received another complaint about food from the same hotel on June 21 and started looking into it immediately. When they went to inspect, they found that Kochi Corporation officials had already ordered the hotel to shut down.

Hotel to Reopen Only After Full Inspection

T.K. Ashraf, Chairman of the Corporation Health Standing Committee, said they acted on the first complaint right away and closed the hotel the same day. He added that the hotel can reopen only after passing a full inspection by the Corporation.
