Milk vending units often operate with limited monitoring, increasing the risk of adulteration and poor handling. To strengthen safety, FSSAI issued an advisory on 19 November 2025 outlining clear requirements for all dairy units using vending machines and kiosks.

Rapid Test Kits Made Mandatory

FSSAI has mandated that all operators keep FSSAI-validated rapid test kits at every vending point. These kits detect common adulterants within minutes, and consumers may use them with staff support. Operators must use only FSSAI-listed kits and store them as per manufacturer guidelines. Each vending point must also display simple, visible instructions on how to use the kits, ensuring consumers understand the process and feel confident about the milk being dispensed.

Routine Checks and Record Keeping

Dairy units must maintain brief records of all tests conducted. They must also monitor kit expiry dates and replace expired kits promptly to ensure reliable testing and good food safety practices.

Strengthening Consumer Trust

By ensuring easy access to test kits and promoting transparent handling, the advisory reduces adulteration risks and improves confidence in milk vending units. These measures support compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act and help ensure consumers receive safe, hygienic milk every time.
