Food Safety Inspection in Karungalpalayam
Following reports of plastic sheets being used for steaming idlis in other states, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration officials inspected idli-making shops in Karungalpalayam, Erode Fon Tuesday. Designated Officer J. Thanga Vignesh, along with food safety officers Selvaraj, Selvan, and Arunkumar, led the inspection, focusing on roadside shops that produce idlis in bulk.
Confiscation of Plastic and Penalty Imposed
Officials discovered prohibited plastic bags in several shops and confiscated them. They imposed a ₹6,000 penalty on one shopkeeper and issued a notification. Additionally, they fined another vendor ₹3,000 for storing and distributing snacks wrapped in newspapers.
Health Risks and Awareness Initiatives
Mr Thanga Vignesh warned that plastic sheets contain harmful chemicals that pose health risks. To promote safer practices, officials plan to conduct a one-day food safety training program for idlis shop owners and workers. Consumers can report food safety violations via WhatsApp at 9444042322.
