Toxic “Fortified” Oil in Punjab Traced to Kolkata: Health Authorities Take Action

Key Update

A joint probe across Punjab and Kolkata uncovered the source of toxic “fortified” oil after six residents of Rajpura, including two children, were hospitalised at PGI, Chandigarh. Patients showed persistent vomiting, extreme weakness, and altered consciousness. Tests revealed life-threatening hypercalcemia caused by Hypervitaminosis D, which led to acute kidney distress. Health officials traced the contaminated oil back to Kolkata after the first reported cases of severe Vitamin D toxicity. Punjab’s health department and food safety wing identified a local-level network that adulterated and repackaged oil from reputed brands.

Adulteration and Fraud Exposed

Investigators discovered that perpetrators opened genuine oil packages, infused them with excessive Vitamin D, and repackaged the mixture under a fake local brand. They added fraudulent labels claiming the product was “Fortified for bone health” and falsely carried FSSAI approval marks to gain consumer trust. The state food lab in Kharar declared the seized samples substandard and hazardous. Earlier raids recovered over 350 boxes and hundreds of bottles of the adulterated oil.

Action Taken and Public Advisory

The food safety wing has filed court proceedings against the accused. Authorities issued immediate public advisories across villages near Rajpura, instructing residents to stop using the oil. The retail shop involved has since closed, and surveys continue to monitor affected households.
