Toxic Scoops: Detergent & Expired Flavours Found in Ludhiana Ice Cream Raid

Toxic Scoops: Detergent & Expired Flavours Found in Ludhiana Ice Cream Raid

Overview

In a recent raid, the Health Department in Ludhiana shut down an ice cream manufacturing unit in the Hambran industrial area after uncovering appalling hygiene violations. Officials found cluttered waste, uncovered raw materials, swarming houseflies, and expired ice cream flavours, which were destroyed on-site. The department issued a challan for violating food safety norms.

Karnataka Raids Expose Toxic Additives

In a similar crackdown in Karnataka, the Food Safety and Drug Administration raided 220 outlets in April. They issued notices to 97 shops for violating storage and safety standards. Shockingly, inspectors found detergent powder in ice cream—used to simulate creaminess—and phosphoric acid in cool drinks to enhance fizz. These additives pose serious health risks, including vomiting, digestive damage, kidney issues, and bone weakening.

Synthetic Milk, Artificial Dyes, and Contaminated Water Used

The investigation revealed more disturbing practices. Some manufacturers used synthetic milk made from detergent, starch, or urea, while others replaced natural sugar with non-permitted sweeteners like saccharin. Factories also added excessive flavouring agents, artificial dyes, and used non-potable water in ice candies and drinks. A major offender faced a ₹38,000 fine, according to media reports.

Health Hazards of Common Adulterants

The following are the common health hazards of adulterants:

  • Detergent powder can cause nausea, diarrhoea, and even burns in the throat and stomach.
  • Phosphoric acid, found in sodas and detergents, increases the risk of kidney stones, tooth decay, and osteoporosis when consumed excessively.

How to Detect Adulterated Ice Cream at Home

Health officials advise consumers to stay vigilant. Signs of adulteration include:

  • Quick melting
  • Gritty or icy texture
  • Foaming when lemon juice is added (indicates possible detergent presence)

Consumer Advisory

Authorities urge the public to buy ice cream only from trusted vendors, inspect packaging for expiry dates, and report suspicious products to local food safety offices.
