UAE Schools Tighten Campus Food Rules, Ban Sugary Snacks and Fizzy Drinks

Key Update

Government schools across the UAE have tightened rules on the food students can bring to campus. The move targets sugary sweets, fizzy drinks and other unhealthy snacks that educators say affect behaviour and academic performance. In notices to parents, schools said sugary candies, artificially coloured sugary snacks, flavoured crisps and carbonated drinks are no longer permitted.

Linking Diet to Classroom Behaviour

School administrators said research and observations link such products to hyperactivity, poor concentration and classroom disruption. They warned that these issues undermine learning outcomes and disturb the broader school environment.

Leaders expressed particular concern about sweets containing artificial colours and chemical additives, along with brightly coloured beverages and processed snacks. Some of these items carry warning labels highlighting their potential impact on children’s attention and activity levels. Educators stressed that food choices directly influence students’ daily behaviour, emotional balance and readiness to learn. They emphasised that unhealthy eating habits can gradually erode focus and academic engagement.

Strengthening School–Parent Partnership

To ensure the success of the new measures, school administrations called for active parental involvement. They urged parents to check lunchboxes regularly and provide balanced, nutritious meals. Schools also encouraged parents to speak with their children about avoiding the purchase or exchange of banned food items during school hours.

“We are partners with parents in safeguarding students’ wellbeing,” school messages stated, reaffirming their shared responsibility in creating a safe and supportive learning environment. Administrators concluded that sustained parental cooperation will help build a healthier school culture—one that promotes concentration, positive behaviour and long-term academic success.
