UP Eggs Now Carry Lay and Expiry Dates: New Rules from April 1

Key Update

From April 1, Uttar Pradesh will require egg producers to stamp each egg with its expiry date and lay date, Neha Lalchandani reports. The Animal Husbandry Department will take strict action against traders and farmers who ignore the rule, destroying non-compliant eggs or marking them ‘not fit for human consumption.

Safe Storage Guidelines

Eggs stay safe for about two weeks at room temperature (around 30°C). Refrigerated at 2–8°C, they can last up to five weeks. Officials also caution that eggs cannot be stored in the same cold storage with vegetables because they require different temperatures. Uttar Pradesh currently has only two dedicated egg cold storage facilities, in Agra and Jhansi, making proper handling and storage critical at all stages.

Consumer Awareness Gap

Additional Chief Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Mukesh Meshram, said inspections revealed many producers violate existing rules, and consumers often remain unaware. The new labelling rule aims to address this gap and ensure safer egg consumption across the state.
