Report
Tension flared at the Mental Health Institute (MHI), affiliated with Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH-32) in Chandigarh, on Wednesday morning when a patient discovered a live worm in their breakfast. The worm was found crawling in an idli, prompting the patient’s family to alert others and advise against consuming the food.
Hospital Launches Immediate Probe, Collects Food Sample
The hospital administration responded swiftly by collecting the food sample for testing. Professor AK Atri, Director Principal of GMCH-32, confirmed that the hospital initiated an internal investigation to determine the cause. “After receiving the complaint, we inspected all food preparation areas and reviewed food-handling protocols. Our findings suggest that an insect may have accidentally fallen onto the food during the wrapping process,” said Dr. Atri.
Authorities Suspect Accidental Contamination During Wrapping
Dr. Atri explained that the food, prepared at GMCH-32’s mess, is transported directly to MHI. Since no other complaints were reported, officials believe the contamination was likely an isolated incident. This case comes just days after a similar complaint surfaced at the canteen of PGI’s new OPD, where worms were reportedly found in food served there as well. In that instance, a formal complaint was also filed with the hospital authorities.
