Report
In Bengaluru, the health department will set up food-testing kits for consumers at 10 malls on Friday to boost citizen involvement in the fight against food adulteration.
According to food safety commissioner Srinivas K, each of the selected malls will feature an FSSAI-approved “magic box” to detect adulteration in seven food categories: milk, fats, sweeteners, grains, fruits, vegetables, salt, spices, and beverages.
The Magic Box
The magic box contains chemical solutions, powders, paper strips like red litmus and turmeric paper, and tools such as a lactometer and magnet. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao will launch the magic box at Phoenix Mall of Asia on Ballari Road. At the same time, the boxes will be installed in nine other malls: Vaishnavi Sapphire Centre, Elements Mall in Thanisandra, Meenakshi Mall on Bannerghatta Road, Sobha Mall on Church Street, Central Mall in Bellandur, Gopalan Mall in Beniganahalli, Nexus Mall in Koramangala, Bharatiya Mall in Thanisandra, and GT World Mall on Magadi Road.
The public can use the kit to test their food for a small fee.
