Delta Air Lines Suspends Hot Meal Service Amid Food Safety Concerns

Report

Delta Air Lines, a major United States airline has suspended hot meal service on over 200 flights departing from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport due to food safety issues at its catering facility. The airline has ceased operations at the affected kitchen and will source hot meals from alternative locations. On Sunday, Delta announced the suspension following a recent inspection that uncovered a food safety problem at the Detroit kitchen. The airline’s catering partner quickly halted hot food production and ceased all operations at the facility.

On Friday, Delta informed flight crews via email that they could not load first-class meals because of an unexpected supply chain issue. To address this disruption, the airline added extra snacks to the affected flights.

So far, Delta has reported no cases of illness among customers or employees linked to the food safety issue. The airline is offering travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles to passengers impacted by the meal service interruption.

Legal Action Filed Over Hot Coffee Spill

Delta Air Lines faces a lawsuit from a Washington woman who claims she sustained serious burns from a coffee spill during a flight to Paris (CDG). Cheryl Myers has filed her case in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, alleging first and second-degree burns.

Myers asserts that Delta’s flight crew ignored her concerns and delayed medical assistance, exacerbating her injuries. The lawsuit contends that the airline failed to follow proper medical emergency procedures.

Mark Lindquist, the attorney representing Myers, claims the coffee was excessively hot, exceeding industry standards. An emergency room doctor expressed surprise that such hot coffee was served on a plane.

Myers, a flight attendant for another airline, described the coffee as “boiling.” Her lawsuit argues that Delta’s inadequate medical response worsened the severity of her burns.

This incident follows a July event in which a Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam (AMS) had to divert to New York JFK due to spoiled chicken. As a result, the airline limited meal options to pasta for several days on select flights.
