Report
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has directed all States and Union Territories (UTs) to intensify their monitoring of Dairy Analogues throughout March, considering the increased demand for dairy products during the current festive season.
Purpose of the Monitoring
FSSAI aims to prevent food contamination and ensure proper labeling amid heightened consumer demand for these products. The agency is increasing inspections as part of its ongoing efforts to combat food adulteration and uphold food safety standards. “Given the higher consumption of dairy products during the festive period, we are focusing our monitoring efforts on Dairy Analogues this month,” FSSAI stated.
Regulation on Dairy Analogues
Sub-Regulation 2.1.1.3(f) of the FSS (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, prohibits falsely marketing non-dairy products as milk or milk-derived products. Dairy Analogues are products that replace milk components, either partially or entirely, with non-dairy ingredients like almonds, soy, or oats, while imitating the appearance, texture, and function of milk or dairy products.
“FSSAI clarifies that Dairy Analogues are not classified as milk, dairy products, or mixed milk products.” When manufacturers alter dairy products by replacing milk fat or protein with vegetable oil, fat, or protein, they create a Dairy Analogue.
Steps to Ensure Compliance
FSSAI continues to address ongoing issues related to the standards and labeling of Dairy Analogues, as well as their misleading promotion as dairy items. To tackle this, FSSAI has instructed State authorities to carry out comprehensive testing and label inspections. The aim is to ensure strict adherence to regulations and safeguard consumers from deceptive practices. By enhancing oversight, FSSAI seeks to protect consumers and maintain transparency within the dairy alternative market.
