Report
A 46-year-old woman from Kollam, Deepthi Prabha, died on Wednesday night, reportedly due to food poisoning after consuming tuna fish. Her husband, Syam Kumar (51) and son Arjun (22), who also ate the fish, were hospitalised with vomiting and diarrhoea. Their conditions are stable, according to police. The family had purchased a large tuna fish on Saturday and stored it in their refrigerator. They consumed portions of it over several days. On Tuesday, Syam and Arjun began experiencing symptoms of foodborne illness but chose to self-medicate.
Sudden Deterioration and Hospitalisation
On Wednesday, Deepthi called her husband from work complaining of nausea and vomiting. Syam brought her home around 3 p.m. Soon after, Deepthi went to the bathroom and did not return. When she didn’t respond, Syam broke open the door and found her unconscious. Despite rushing her to the hospital, she died during treatment.
Authorities Launch Investigation
Food safety officials collected food samples from the residence and sent them for testing. Police registered a case of unnatural death under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. “We need the internal organ test results to determine the exact cause of death,” said a food safety official. Police also confirmed they are waiting for the postmortem report to conclude.
