A food safety scare erupted at Chendamangalam Government LP School near Kochi in Kerala after staff served rice suspected to be stale during Tuesday’s midday meal. Several children developed stomach discomfort and went to hospitals for treatment. Parents inspected the school’s rice stock on Wednesday and discovered insects and maggots in the stored sacks. Food Safety Officers Reverse Earlier Report

Food Safety officers inspected the stock and declared the June batch substandard, contradicting their June 27 report that had certified the rice as safe. Experts warn that eating stale or insect-infested rice can cause foodborne illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, and severe stomach infections.

Parents Question Negligence, Authorities Respond

Parents alleged that teachers detected a foul smell in the midday Meal but still served it to students. The headmistress claimed the smell was typical of ration rice and said staff removed questionable rice before serving. The school immediately sourced fresh rice from outside for Wednesday’s meal, and Supplyco delivered a new stock later that evening. Local leaders demanded an investigation into the supply of poor-quality rice. Authorities promised stricter monitoring and quality checks to ensure safe, hygienic meals for children, stressing that their health cannot be compromised.
