After cracking down on harmful food additives, the Karnataka State Food Safety and Drug Administration has now shifted focus to curbing trans fat in cooking oil—an effort aimed at strengthening food safety and improving public health. In a video conference held on Wednesday, the Commissioner of Food Safety convened key stakeholders, including district officials, hotel and bakery association members, RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) agency representatives, and the Karnataka State Bio-Diesel Development Board, to map out a comprehensive action plan.
Strict Hygiene and Labelling Norms for Oil Producers
The commissioner directed cooking oil manufacturers to maintain high hygiene standards during production and ensure that all products carry accurate labels in line with FSSAI regulations. Mandatory fortification with Vitamins A and D was also emphasised. Additionally, manufacturers must conduct oil quality testing at least once every six months to stay compliant.
Health Experts Push for Low-Trans-Fat Oils
Joining the session virtually, Dr. U.S. Vishal Rao, oncologist and head and neck surgeon at HCG Cancer Centre, underlined the dangers of trans fat. He warned that its consumption significantly increases the risk of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Dr. Rao urged the food industry to adopt healthier oil choices with lower trans fat content.
RUCO Drives Used Oil Collection
RUCO agency officials reported that they had collected 32.68 lakh litres of used cooking oil over 2024–25 and 2025–26. The administration encouraged agencies to intensify collection efforts and supply used oil exclusively to authorised biodiesel units, ensuring environmentally responsible disposal.
Clapdown on Reuse of Cooking Oil
The commissioner issued strict instructions to hotels and bakeries to hand over used oil only to registered RUCO partners. Reusing cooking oil, he warned, poses a severe threat to public health and must be eliminated. Reaffirming the department’s commitment, the commissioner stated that reducing trans fat levels and ensuring safe disposal of used cooking oil are now top priorities in Karnataka’s mission to create a safer, healthier food ecosystem.
