Rotten Meat Scandal Forces J&K to Tighten Meat Safety Rules

Key Update

The Jammu and Kashmir government has tightened meat safety enforcement after officials seized hundreds of kilos of rotten meat from illegal storage units in Srinagar. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) swiftly ordered all businesses to comply with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations for frozen meat, chicken, and related products.

Mandatory Standards for All Operators

The directive covers manufacturers, retailers, cold storage operators, transporters, and e-commerce platforms. Every frozen meat package must carry clear labelling on shelf life, storage temperature, batch details, and the FSSAI license number. Businesses must also maintain hygienic storage conditions and ensure proper refrigeration during transport. Authorities have warned of strict action against violators. Penalties may include fines up to ₹10 lakh, suspension of licenses, and even imprisonment. In addition, officials will seize unsafe stock and close non-compliant storage units. The government has made it clear that consumer health cannot be compromised.

High Court Intervention

Amid rising concerns, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has stepped in. The court directed the government to file a detailed compliance report within four days, signalling zero tolerance for unsafe food practices. Officials say this action aims to restore public confidence in the meat supply chain, particularly after the recent scandal shook consumer trust. Health officials stressed that the crackdown is not just about punishing offenders but also about creating a culture of food safety. By enforcing FSSAI standards and monitoring storage practices, the government hopes to ensure that only safe and hygienic meat reaches people’s kitchens.
