Committee on Petitions Raises Alarm on Unsafe Food in J&K

Key Update

The Committee on Petitions met on Monday in J&K (Jammu & Kashmir) to examine a petition on adulteration of essential food items, including meat, milk, wheat, and processed foods. Chairman Pirzada Farooq Ahmad Shah led the discussion along with committee members. The Chairman directed officials to launch rigorous inspection drives across the Union Territory and to monitor the sale and supply of food strictly. He instructed them to enforce all food safety guidelines and punish those selling rotten meat or adulterated products.

Committee Calls for Stronger Monitoring

The Committee directed authorities to revive slaughterhouses, tighten checkpoints at Lakhanpur, Udhampur, and other entry points, and block the inflow of adulterated food and spurious drugs into J&K. Members raised concern over the growing incidence of foodborne illnesses and demanded continuous inspections, regular sampling, and mandatory laboratory testing to ensure a safe food supply.

Committee Stresses Penalties for Violators

The Committee directed officials to impose strict penalties on violators to deter future offences. The Chairman emphasised that the supply of unsafe food poses a serious risk to public health and requires urgent action.
