Ernakulam District Collector G Priyanka emphasised the importance of training school students to read warning food labels on food packets during a special meeting of the district food safety advisory committee on Wednesday. She highlighted that this initiative will empower students to make healthier food choices. To further promote awareness, the collector urged schools to install sugar and oil content boards, helping students understand the impact of excessive consumption on their health. The committee also resolved to intensify regular inspections of all Nutrimix production centres in the district, ensuring children receive nutritious meals.
Training for Home-Based Food Entrepreneurs
Additionally, the meeting recommended organising awareness classes and training programs on food safety laws for home-based food entrepreneurs, supporting their self-employment ventures while maintaining safety standards.
Stricter Street Food and Nighttime Stall Monitoring
To safeguard public health, officials will step up inspections of street food stalls and other nighttime food distribution outlets. From the second week of December through the first week of January, joint inspections involving officials from relevant departments will ramp up in preparation for Christmas and New Year celebrations. Food safety assistant commissioner Jose Lawrence and other concerned officials attended the meeting.
